Part of the atelierWG series
To me, printing is an ecstatic experience. The same goes for designing printed matter, designing typefaces included. Yet, to keep elegance and technique balanced isn't as easy as one would think.
The history is really something. It comprised a development from organic ‘wooden types’ until a typeface containing 3,500 characters pro weight, just for a general appearance of harmony, even in case several foreign types (such as Greek types) are used next to the Latin type.
Working with other printing techniques, notably lithography, was a recent addition, leading to over 4,000 printings for a piece of writing, De paradijsvogel. I wrote and published its basic text in 2006, but illustrated it now including an afterword as a litho. It renewed the experience that colours depend on the technique used. It turns everything upside down again.
It's but one way to experience life.
