Open 18, 19, 25, 26 November

Part of the puntWG Open Call Series

For the series of performances Moving Shadows, Jae Pil Eun and Tao Yang propose a miniature landscape within the walls of PuntWG. The piece is inspired by a traditional form of Chinese outdoor theater, where garden arts and landscape techniques are deployed to make what is small look large, and what is dense feel sparse. These theatrical techniques are a way of implying the presence of the visitor, who encounters different scenes and vistas with each next step, contributing to a spatial understanding of a narrative. At PuntWG, the landscape is fragmented into solely the appearance of structures of roofs, informed by Chinese traditional crafts and knowledge. Wearing objects of ceramics as garments, the accompanying sounds of the performance are in tune with the body languages of the performers, allowing for echoes and variations of rhythm and tones. While the performers move, the architectural context transforms to suggest a passing of viewpoints. Together, the performative instruments are used to propose an alternative gesture of how a narrative can be experienced through sounds and shadows.
