Obsessie
Pauline Wiertz
28 Jun till 10 Jul 2016
Opening: Saturday 2 Jul 2016 — 17:00 till 19:00 hrs

"When you look at your groceries from a different perspective, a whole new world of possibilities opens up",  says Pauline Wiertz. In her retrospective 'Obsession' she reflects on the last two decades. Old and new works are part of it. The common theme running through them is her obsessive workmethod.

Wiertz gathers and records all the objects that draw her attention. She likes cooking and good food. During shopping she finds all kinds of strange and beautifull things. A weird potato, a strange carrot and also foreign fruit and vegetables.

People in her surrounding know about her need to collect. According to the artist some even participate:
"Then for example I find an asparagus in front of the door of my studio, or somebody comes by to bring me a pretty pickle. My mother has even grown little pickles for me, so that I was able to make a suitable clasp for one of my necklaces."

Wiertz casts her finds in plaster and then in clay or porcelain. She uses some of these casts as bricks to build objects, others are objects in themselves. In this retrospective they can be admired in a custom made 'Chinese' closet. Two installations are attached to the wall: one with pistol casts, the other with a collection of jewelry. With this the artists offers an unique peek in her 'Obsession'.

On the artist

Since her final exam at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in 1977, Pauline Wiertz has been working with ceramics. At present she is even more fond of this  medium. Next to ceramic objects, she started making porcelain jewlery in the year 2000.

After winning the  Inax Designprijs (1990) Wiertz worked in Japan.  In 2005, 2011 en 2012 she visited China. Among other things for an exchange between Delft and Jingdezhe and an artist resideny in San Bao, Jingdezhen.

Japan and China have a rich history of ceramics. In Jingdezhen porcelain has been made for more than 1000 years. Visiting these countries has greatly inspired Wiertz. For instance she started painting her work.

The exhibition will be open from the 28th of June to the 10th of July from 14:00 to 18:00 o'clock and on appointment.
