The Roots / De Wortels
Anna Volkova
8 till 16 Jul 2017
Opening: Saturday 8 Jul 2017 — 17:00 till 19:00 hrs

For the exhibition at puntWG the artist explores her memories. The paper-cut portraits, hand-sculpted porcelain, sketches, short novels and black-and-white photos are results of a long research. Through the years she has continuously worked on a project: “Family Album”, which contains images, letters, drawings and stories of four generations of her family. Piece by piece gently picking up particles that can tell her who she is. The artist believes that this personal research also has social value – you can see a change of epochs, characters, cultures and ideas within one small family.

The exhibition is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-6 pm.

On the artist

Volkova’s work is mainly about Nostalgia. Nostalgia for the times which she experienced or dreamed of. Her roots lie in St-Petersburg where she was influenced once and for all by its great architecture, culture and history.

She grew up in Soviet times in a family where her parents created a field of spiritual magnetism full of cultural events, despising and protesting the existing Soviet system with many likeminded families.

Living in this epoch, witnessing and even talking to some great people had a big influence on her. Important events, memories and obsessions - from these revelations she selected the most visually bright moments and incorporated them into ideas for her installations.
